Orthotics - supporting you

Orthoses are semi-permanent devices that are placed either on the foot or in the shoe to improve how your limbs and joints work, in much the same way that spectacles or contact lenses can improve your eyesight.

For people with CMT, an orthosis can be an invaluable aid to help counteract the effects of CMT and help you to keep mobile without putting too much extra pressure on other parts of your body, such as your knees and hips.

The types of orthosis that can help with CMT range from simple insoles to lightweight plastic splints, to custom made footwear, to traditional metal callipers.

Any external aid can take time to get used to and you may find a physiotherapist helpful when using a new orthosis.  Although you make take a bit of time to get comfortable with a new orthosis, it should never cause any problems like pain, sores or bleeding.  If it does, you should see your orthotist immediately and have it altered.

Everyone with CMT has different needs and the orthotist will take care that you receive the right support for you.

Some of the orthoses you might hear being talked about include:

FO – foot orthosis – insoles

FFO – functional foot orthosis – insoles

SMO – supra-malleolar orthosis – ankle brace

AFO – ankle-foot orthosis

DAFO – dynamic ankle foot orthosis

SAFO – silicone ankle foot orthosis

JAFO – jointed ankle foot orthosis

KO – knee orthosis

KAFO – knee ankle foot orthosis

HKAFO – hip knee ankle foot orthosis

In many cases, various kinds of orthotics can be purchased direct from their manufacturers:

Silicon Ankle Foot Orthoses are manufactured by Dorset Orthopaedic Ltd - www.safo.eu.com

"Foot-ups" are a small, inconspicuous orthotic which attaches to the shoe-lace holes of your shoes, and are helpful for foot-drop - contact www.technologyinmotion.co.uk

In all cases, ideally you should see your Orthotist before purchasing any orthotic, to ensure that you are really helping and not causing yourself further difficulties.
