Drugs list

This list has been reviewed in December 2005 by Dr Mary Reilly from the National Hospital for Neurology, London, and Dr David Hilton-Jones, from the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, and their advise is as follows:

Many drugs can cause peripheral neuropathy. There is NO evidence that this means that these drugs can worsen an existing neuropathy, such as CMT.   Bearing that in mind, however, do remember that there are alternatives for all of these drugs.

The only drug on this list that has been proven to be toxic to someone with CMT is Vincristine – an anti-cancer drug.

In particular, the benefits of Statins far outweighs the potential harm – see more detail on this in the Drug section of the FAQ’s.

With any drug, whether it is on this list or not, it is always wise to discuss prescribed medications with your medical professions, including any potential side-effects, whilst keeping the diagnosis of CMT in the patient in mind.
