We are delighted to announce that the famous cricketer, Michael Vaughan, has agreed to be Patron of CMT United Kingdom. The Trustees contacted him after reading in his autobiography "Time to Declare" that he has CMT. Michael Vaughan retired from first class cricket on 30 June 2009 as the most successful England captain in history and the one that will always be remembered for ending the long wait to reclaim the Ashes.
Vaughan’s record of 26 Test wins from 51 matches as captain overhauled Peter May’s record of 20 victories from 41 games, but it was his inspired captaincy in 2005 to help England secure their first Ashes triumph since 1986-7 which secured his place in cricket history.
He had already established himself as one of the leading batsmen in the world when he took over as captain from Nasser Hussain in 2003, scoring 900 runs in seven Tests against Sri Lanka and India the previous year before becoming the first visiting batsman in 32 years to exceed 600 runs during a series in Australia.
He lost his first Test against South Africa at Lord’s, but pulled the team around to secure a creditable 2-2 draw that summer, before putting the building blocks in place to guide England to a record series wins in succession - including the 2005 Ashes success.
Successive knee injuries restricted Vaughan’s involvement to just 20 Tests after 2005, but he did enjoy a golden return after two years on the sidelines with a century in his comeback Test against West Indies at Headingley in 2007.
Michael finally succumbed to the knee injury that had plagued him and retired in June 2009. He has become one of the leading lights within English cricket media working for both the Telegraph and the BBC. His well-respected and authoritative opinions have earned him praise and new notoriety within the sporting world.
