Timms Review PIP workshops: register your interest by 21 August

The government’s Timms Review of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is running a series of workshops this autumn, and it wants to hear from disabled people and people with long-term health conditions. If you have experience of the PIP process, this is a chance to help shape what the Review recommends.

Registration is open now and closes at 5pm on Friday 21 August 2026.

What is this about?

The Timms Review was set up to make sure PIP is fair and fit for the future. A steering group is developing recommendations, and it wants to test and refine them with people who have real experience of the system.

These “shaping recommendations” workshops focus on your views of the ideas being developed, rather than going back over problems with the current system. After each workshop, your input is summarised and shared with the steering group. Not every idea will be taken forward, but the group has committed to explaining to each workshop what was used and what wasn’t, and why.

Who can take part?

The workshops are mainly for disabled people and people with long-term health conditions, ideally with experience of the PIP process, taking part in a personal capacity. You don’t need any previous experience of government reviews to join.

The Review expects more interest than there are places, so registering doesn’t guarantee a spot. Selection is done at random, but the team will balance the mix so a range of backgrounds, locations, conditions and experiences is represented.

What’s involved?

There are 15 one-day workshops (10am to 4pm, with regular breaks) across the UK during September and October — 9 in person and 6 online, with up to 20 people at each. The Review would like to hear from people who live in the region where a workshop is held, and you can join one workshop only.

Accessibility

The Review team aims to meet participants’ access needs so everyone can take part fully. You can note any reasonable adjustments on the registration form — for example workshop materials in accessible formats such as large print or Easy Read, a carer or personal assistant joining you, a sign language interpreter, or a support animal at in-person sessions.

Payment and benefits

Everyone who attends a full workshop is offered a one-off payment, and reasonable travel and other necessary costs (such as a personal assistant) are reimbursed.

Please read this part carefully. These payments are treated as earnings, are subject to tax and National Insurance, and could affect means-tested benefits depending on your circumstances. If you receive benefits, tell your work coach or local Jobcentre before you take part, and seek advice from the office that administers your benefit if you are unsure. You can also take part without the payment, or ask for a lower amount.

A note for people in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

The Review wants to hear from people right across the UK. PIP has been replaced by Adult Disability Payment in Scotland, but the team is keen to hear from people in Scotland who had experience of PIP beforehand, and the Scottish workshops will be tailored to reflect this. People in Wales and Northern Ireland are warmly encouraged to take part too.
